My two daughters – 10 and 11 years old enjoyed the mysterious unexpected events in the book and the animal characters made the story so much fun. They were very eager to know what happens next and some of the animals even inspired one of the girls to use the characters for her creative writing exam. The two children heroes in the book are very brave, determined and truly inspirational.

I read this to my two boys over the summer holidays, loved the messages that my children picked up from the book about treating animals with more respect, the characters were excellent and the story was full of exciting and funny moments. Feels like a classic now and would definitely recommend!

I would give this book a six if I could! Great book for reading out loud at bedtime especially as so many great characters. Also a great message for children around conservation and how we treat animals.

Reminds me of the classic childhood books such as Roald Dahl I grew up on, loved reading it to my kids! Excellent bedtime story 👍

I bought the Kindle version as a bedtime story for my kids, 9 and 11, as I’d seen the cover and ‘reviews’ from animals on Save Wild Tigers social media on World Rainforest Day and they made me laugh. I wasn’t sure what to expect but we loved all the great characters and their names (Sebastian Trophy-Assetclass and his sidekick Virgil Boghero and the even nastier Baron Von Nesti come to mind) and all the animals including the monkeys Emile, Zola and Titus. The book makes you laugh out loud but also makes you think about conservation and the trade in animals that you don’t hear about much. It’s actually jaw-dropping to think the trade is worth billions every year, driving these poor animals to extinction. The only negative was the book could have been longer. We were sad when it came to an end and would love to read more of Bernard’s adventures and battles against the trade and trophy hunting.
I loved this enchanting and charming children’s tale of a rich naive, orphan protagonist who is taken advantage of by his solicitor and the villain of the piece. We all love a strong, clever orphan who overcomes evil and being a victim. Hints of adventurous comedy evoked by such tales of Pippi Longstocking and the good reigns over evil plot such as with Harry Potter. Educating our children about wildlife and the impact gaming sports are having is topical; this story is compelling with its quest to reveal the truth to children in a fun-like manner, ending happily, so as to give future generations hope. Really recommend this book as a good bedside story or for 8 to 12 years to lap up in their own leisure. Plus childlike adults like me who just like goodhearted imaginative stories.

Good and unusual story, a central character you really care about, a lot of quirky humour
I really enjoyed reading this. This book is aimed at 8-12 year-olds and I am much older than that, but it has a good and unusual story, a central character you really care about, a lot of quirky humour, and a lot of thinly-disguised anger about things that happen in the world and shouldn’t be allowed to happen. It also has a beautiful cover (monkeys, a sleepy cat, an anteater!). Great stuff.
I brought as a Christmas gift for my son as the cover was very catching, from reading it to him I was instantly loving the unique characters and settings which lots of books I have tried for my kids have lacked of recently. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good read.

Really enjoyed this book, funny, sad and a thrilling mystery that adults can enjoy as much as their kids. Would definitely recommend it.
